GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It’s totally free software for basic photo retouching, image composition and image authoring, and works on a bunch of operating system platforms and languages. But most importantly… it works!
It isn’t Adobe Photoshop, but it never pretended to be. What it is is a simple but very solid piece of software that covers your basic needs, has a small footprint (which ergo makes it fast), and costs you not a thing. Belongs on your field laptop, at the very least.
