Needing to fire up resource hog Photoshop when all one wants to do is just resize (more often than not, shrink) an image gets old pretty fast. So I went looking for a simple utility for this “specialized” purpose, maybe something so tiny I could keep it lurking on my Taskbar (or create a Quick Launch icon), keeping it just a fast click away when needed. Like when I create a thumbnail of Pic of the Day images for the site.

A woman walked into a camera shop to return her recently purchased camera. When the salesperson asked, “Is it broken?” she replied, “No, it just does not do all the things I wanted it to do.” After patient listening, the salesperson asked, “Did you read any of the book that came with the camera?” The woman quickly responded, “NO, I just did not have time and really did not have any desire to do all that reading.”

Not really a photo tool per se, ArtRage is powerful but easy-to-use digital painting software for artists. But it does have one feature that may pique your interest: You can load your photo as a tracing image, a guide on which you can then build your painting “by hand,” so to speak.

Very simple, easy-to-use solution for image management, editing and sharing, and no, you don’t need to have a Kodak camera to take advantage of this simplicity.

GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It’s totally free software for basic photo retouching, image composition and image authoring, and works on a bunch of operating system platforms and languages. But most importantly… it works!

Definitely no need for this hereabouts this time of the year; then again, I’m off on a cruise in a few weeks, so this may come in handy then! Then again #2, considering how much my equipment costs, maybe trying to save a few bucks on this may not be the brightest of ideas. Your call if you want to try this.

This is probably one of the best, most useful, Photoshop plugins I’ve seen for photographers. Combine the fact that this pro tool is absolutely and totally free makes it a no-brainer must have! Run, do not walk, on over to download your copy (PC version only) from publisher OptikVerve Labs’ site before they come to their senses and start charging for this (and believe me, you’d pay for this!).

If you don’t know what to do with the many digital photos that you have stored on your hard drive, do what my daughter did. Using Windows Movie Maker, for Father’s Day, she chose the best pics and added descriptions with some some of my favorite music, and put it in a movie. She then saved it to a CD and gift wrapped it. Wow! It was wonderful seeing flashbacks of our family life in that fashion.
